Contura Suit Carrier Garment Bag

Just discovered this neat garment bag alternative from Omnimus... The Contura Suit Carrier. It's looks great! It's very compact and slim and perfect for packing suits into carryon sized luggage... It looks to be basically a zip-up style sleeve that keeps your clothes nice and secure, way more so than a garment bag (which is basically just throwing a cloth hood over your suit). The only problem so far is that it's only for sale in Hong Kong and Europe... Hopefully they'll start North American distribution soon!
Red Oxx Air Boss

The Air Boss by Red Oxx is one of the most popular travel duffels out there today.

When packed, the bag has a nice, rectilinear shape that allows it to "stand up" stably when it's set down on the ground. There are no bumpers or protective thingies on the bottom, so if you set it down and drag it around, or set it on wet ground, it'll be unprotected. The multiple zones for clothes packing worked really well. The "Claw" shoulder strap is indeed grippy. It's the grippiest strap I've encountered, and it simply does not slip. Kudos to Red Oxx for their slip-resistant design. But to get that level of grip, there's a real design tradeoff with comfort, and comfort really suffers.

The hand-carrying straps are simple and durable, but were also a bit uncomfortable. The 2 straps each consist of a piece of 2" webbing folded over and stitched together, and then there's a simple Cordura wrap with snaps to bundle those two straps together. Maybe the folded-over webbing will soften with additional use, but for now, with the bag fully loaded, they sort of cut into my hands a little bit. Nice round leather handles on the straps would be a HUGE upgrade for this product. The equivalent strap on my Jansport bag is also just webbing, but instead of simply folding the webbing in half, it's wrapped around some kind of round core. Way more comfy.

The hardware used on the bag all seemed to be very sturdy and likely to be quite durable. The zippers are indeed burly and probably very reliable, just like Red Oxx promotes. The tradeoff with big zippers like that is that they tend to have visible "gaps" between the teeth, which wouldn't be the case with a smaller zipper. I was digging through the bag the other day, and saw daylight coming in through the zipper teeth. Not really a problem, but as a resident of the Pac. NW, I know that visible daylight there means it'll be easier for rain to penetrate the zipper quickly. There's no sort of "storm flap" over any of the zippers. Would also be nice if the zippers (or at least the one on the main central compartment) were the kind where the pulls overlay each other so that a small lock can be easily attached.

The lining of all of the zippered compartments is red, with one notable exception, and that's the small compartment on the outside which is apparently targeted at being the place to carry your boarding pass or passport or similar. I say it's a "notable" exception because I love the
way Briggs & Riley lines their equivalent compartments with bright orange nylon, so that it's easy to see if it has been left unzipped. When I travel, especially internationally, I tend to constantly check and recheck everything on my bag all the time to make sure I haven't lost anything important. On the Air Boss, that compartment isn't lined in a contrasting color, so it's not immediately visibly obvious that it's been left open. On the plus side, that compartment is pretty deep, which is good, and it's also wide enough that I can get my fairly meaty hand all the way to the bottom.

Kennth Cole Leather Wheeled Carry On Duffel Bag

Alright, I just picked up this wheeled black leather duffel from Kenneth Cole and I'm pretty happy with it. The handle retracts and is zipped up so that it looks just like a classy leather duffel, but you can also wheel it around (because who wants to carry this thing on their shoulder for an hour in an airport)... It is under 45 linear inches, so carry-on friendly, and seems to have the same interior dimensions of a normal carryon. The only thing I don't like about it is the extra weight that the frame and wheels add, but I guess it's not supposed to be carried anyway.

Here are some specs:

- Rich full grain cowhide leather exterior
- Fully lined interior
- 10 lbs
- 21.5" x 11.25" x 11.25"

I'm still paranoid of the leather scratching but I'm like that. It really is a nice classy piece, a step up from the standard black ballistic nylon suitcase that everyone else is wheeling around the terminal...

Choosing The Best Carry On Bag

Now that every airline is charging you to check your luggage, you'll probably save some money going carry-on only. I've advocated this way of travel for years though, it's just so much more convenient to be able to walk off the plane and right out out of the airport. Travelling light is definitely the way to go.

I don't have time to review every carryon suitcase on the market, so I found a few sources of other people that do.

About.com
The Travel Insider
Slate.com

Also saw a great piece on ABC about a comprehensive Consumers Reports review... They really gave Kenneth Cole bags negative ratings, which sort of bothers me because I was thinking of buying one next. Click for the video.

What do I use? Depending on the trip, a standard Samsonite rolling suitcase or my fancier Louis Vuitton annette trolley.

Burberry Messenger Bag For Your Laptop

You have to put your laptop in something, so why not do it with a little style? Burberrys plaid print is classy and timeless, and the quality on these bags is great. You don't want to be just another sheep with a black nylon laptop case do you? Next time you go anywhere, be it the airport, to work, train, bus, whatever, take a look around and count the boring black notebook bags and briefcases... It's time for a little bit of style.

The Burberry bag is 15" by 11" by 4", so it will easily fit a 15.4" computer, and has an interior pocket for your phone and whatever else. Like all Burberry products it is a coated canvas / leather combo made in Italy. Your next flight can be made this stylish for only $895 (not bad compared to some designers).
TSA Airline Carry On Luggage Liquids Restrictions

Always nice to have a review about what is and is not allowed, if the TSA has any restrictions concerning liquids in your carryon baggage, or whatever. Here's an up to date official list.

Air travelers may carry liquids, gels and aerosols in their carry-on bag when going through security checkpoints.

The following rules apply to all liquids, gels, and aerosols carried through security checkpoints.

1. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not allowed. Each container must be three ounces or smaller.
2. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.
3. Each traveler must remove their quart-sized plastic, zip-top bag from their carry-on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items.

A surprising entry on the list of allowed carry-on items was "cigar cutter", which I found weird since mine was confiscated last time I tried to carry one on.
Continue reading "TSA Airline Carry On Luggage Liquids Restrictions"

Skyroll Wheeled Carry On Suitcase And Garment Bag

This is the most useful carry-on suitcase I've seen in a while. Skyroll has a few different options for convenient carry-on garment bags, but their Skyroll on Wheels product gets my vote. It works like a standard carry-on suitcase, except large clothes are placed in a separate garment bag and wrapped around the outside of the suitcase. The suitcase and garment bag are designed to be used together, but can also be used as separate pieces of luggage.

The suitcase has two sections, a main compartment for most of your clothing, and a top compartment for quick access to items you may need while traveling. Open the large front door to load items into the main section of the suitcase. If you need more room in the main section, the top compartment is adjustable, just move it up to make more room in the main compartment. The top compartment is for items you may need to access while traveling. Once SkyRoll is packed, you don't need to remove the garment bag to get to the top compartment, just unzip the top door.

Three suits can be loaded into the garment bag. The garment bag measures 21.5 x 48 inches. The suitcase measures 22 x 12 x 7 inches. With a typically loaded garment bag wrapped around the suitcase the final dimensions are 22 x 14 x 9. It weighs nine pounds empty, seven pounds if you don't use the garment bag.

Black Louis Vuitton Damier Graphite Luggage

Now this is an amazing canvas from Louis Vuitton. The venerable house of Louis Vuitton has unveiled an updated version of its 120 year old Damier Canvas checked design. Finally a change from the classic brown, and not a bright pink fashion color either. The new line of Damier Graphite includes duffels, suitcases, belts, shoes, and anything else for the classy world traveller. I know I have my eye on the rolling carry-on suitcase to replace my Annette. The grey and black pattern has an understated elegance about it, while still maintaining that classic LV luxury style. The collection is aimed at urban, sophisticated men who may shy away from the Monogram Canvas in favor of something more understated. It's the sort of recession-chic that is all the buzz right now.

I can't decide if Purseblog is being sarcastic here or not... I for one love this bag, it definitely sticks out and looks classy while being a masculine color and isn't the normal brown monogram Louis Vuitton... So far it's performed great on about 6 flights, and it's actually quite roomy. The garment bag and folding hanger it came with were a nice touch as well. The black annette canvas is limited production, so pretty soon the only way you'll get one of these is buy buying a used one.

A real steal at almost $1800!

I almost never check luggage these days, it's so much more convenient to just pack light and carry everything on. My samsonite carry-on upright has been with me for almost 100,000 miles probably and is still looking pretty good (2-3 years old).

These bags are seriously tough... The steel frame makes a huge difference, I bought a low end bag a year back because I needed something bigger to check when I was travelling in Los Angeles, and 6 months later (and only 3-4 flights later) the bag is deformed and the frame bent. If you are only going to buy one set of luggage, go for quality.
Features:
- Tough 1682 denier ballistic nylon
- Sleek, co-molded hardware
- Steel frames
- Zip-away accessory strap
- Multiple bloused, gusseted, tilt-out and flat pockets
- Herringbone cross straps
- "Right Height" handles for taller travelers
- Uprights have removable suiter
- Expandable
- Smooth rolling in-line skate wheels
- Bonus hanging toiletry kit with two shoe pockets and laundry bag
